1998: BEN VAUTIER LIMITED EDITION

Take Your Time , 1998 Text written with white acrylic paint on black museum board with clock Board: 16 x 20 inches. Clock: 9 ½ x 2 ¾ inches. Edition of 30 Ben Vautier works with idiosyncrasies of meaning as his materials. His limited edition work includes two elements: a sign and a clock. The clock does what all clocks do, it moves forward, each tick and tock a measure of value. The sign states unequivocally TAKE YOUR TIME, but what does that mean ? To take one’s time is to ignore the necessity of workmanlike effort, to exist at an acceptable degree of motion. But he may also mean, Choose your time . Make your mark.

1998: DONALD LIPSKI LIMITED EDITION

Great Museums of the World , 1998 Book with hole, 11 ½ x 9 ½ inches, Edition of 30 Donald Lipski interrogates the notion of art history by applying an Alexandrian solution. The Gordian Knot presented by this series of books gets a drill treatment: a hole is bored straight through the center of the book revealing on its periphery the vestigial remains of 'culture' as it speaks to us out of the distant past. We are left to consider his ambiguous argument with authority and the opulent and reflexive relic it has created. Please inquire at gibsoncontemporary@gmail.com
